Changing Demographics

A friend of mine drew my attention to this video recently.  This was produced by an obviously Christian-biased organization, but the premise is nonetheless disturbing.

It’s less than 8 minutes long.  Please take the time to watch it…

The basic math that is the premise of this short video is not universally accepted.  Some sources disagree with the rate of population growth required to sustain a population for example.  But the facts remain that (1) Western societies are not keeping up with the necessary growth rate to remain in control of the regions they currently occupy, (2) the Muslim population is growing faster than non-Muslim populations, and (3) the rate of immigration into Western nations – particularly into Europe – is truly astounding and already threatens the integrity of those societies.  Muslims have immigrated in such large numbers that ghettos have formed where Muslims are able to live in large, extended communities without every needing to assimilate into the broader society, learn the language, work for resident businesses and industries, interface with the native population, or even use the banking system prevalent in the region.

In France there are suburbs of Paris where the French Police simply no longer patrol.  See this article from just 7 days ago about cars being set ablaze in such a suburb just 6 days ago, and these articles about a French Soldier and a British Soldier that were killed in the street in front of large numbers of witnesses just a few weeks ago in their respective countries by radicalized Muslims.

In many countries in Europe there are neighborhoods that are considered “no-go” zones where Muslims rule and non-Muslims simply do not travel.

The Pew Research Center in January of 2011 found that…

“The world’s Muslim population is expected to increase by about 35% in the next 20 years.”

“Globally, the Muslim population is forecast to grow at about twice the rate of the non-Muslim population over the next two decades – an average annual growth rate of 1.5% for Muslims, compared with 0.7% for non-Muslims.”

“If current trends continue, Muslims will make up 26.4% of the world’s total projected population of 8.3 billion in 2030, up from 23.4% of the estimated 2010 world population of 6.9 billion.”

But this same report also observes; “While the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the non-Muslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades. From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%, compared with the projected rate of 1.5% for the period from 2010 to 2030.”

The bottom line is that the Muslim community is growing faster than non-Muslim populations, and Muslims are spreading quickly out of their historical areas of habitation in the Middle East and Asia.

Should this worry you?  Maybe not.  I work very closely with several Muslims that I most certainly do not consider to be a threat to me or to America.  They all immigrated to America many years ago, and while they are still practicing Muslims they are no more accepting of radicalized, fundamentalist Islam than you or I.  In fact they are here in Afghanistan risking their own lives – and in some cases the lives of members of their extended families that still live here in Afghanistan – should their identity become known to the Taliban.   I experienced the same thing in Iraq, with our cultural advisors and translators there.

But the fact remains that while 8 in 10 Muslims in the US reject suicide bombing as a legitimate tactic, that means that 2 in 10 do.  With a Muslim population in the US of 2.6 million (latest US census) that means that there are 520,000 Muslims in America that DO support the use of suicide bombers.  If only 1 in 10 of those are the sort that would actually take such action themselves then there are more than 5,000 potential suicide bombers already living in America.

Al Qaeda conducts an intense campaign to recruit so-called “home grown” or “lone wolf” terrorists to join in their cause, and they flood the Internet with information to assist these individuals.  At the same time our government refuses to recognize this threat, and our media goes out of their way to deny that there is any threat at all.  We are told that to be suspicious of young Muslim military-age males is racist.  The result of that denial and naiveté can be seen in the recent Boston Marathon Bombings.

What happens when you broaden the question of American Muslims from “do you consider suicide bombing a legitimate way to defend Islam”, to “do you support taking covert military action against the enemies of Islam”?  Do you not gain additional numbers in that new group that are willing to fight but not necessarily willing to personally blow themselves up?  The Tsarnaev brothers did not want to die… they wanted to kill.

Should this worry you?  Maybe it should.
